This past week volunteers from Colwick Park Lifeguards provided safety cover at the world renowned rowing competition, Henley Royal Regatta (HRR). Since its inception in 1839 HRR has developed into one of the most prestigious events in the rowing calendar, attracting rowers from around the world ranging from university students to Olympians. HRR 2026 featured over 400 races in a knockout format making it a jam packed 6 days of rowing.
Throughout these races Colwick Park Lifeguards were there to keep competitors safe. Our team, compiled of volunteers both new and experienced, took up various positions along the course. Four positions covered by powerboats, staffed by one lifeguard equipped with their Open Water Lifeguard certificate and one helm equipped with their Royal Yachting Association licence . These complimentary skills allow our safety boats to react to any situation and provide efficient and professional responses to ensure the safety of the competitors. We also have one stationary position on the finish pontoon, manned by two lifeguards, to ensure the wellbeing of the competitors once they finish the race.
Henley 2026, as well as being incredibly hot with temperatures reaching over 30 °C, had its fair share of action for our volunteers. Our finish safety boat, alongside monitoring the hot and exhausted competitors also had to deal with large volumes of public craft which on occasion attempted to enter the course. But quick thinking and action by our powerboat helm and lifeguards meant any incidents were avoided. Further action was required from our finish boat when a competitor on the way to the start line capsized in the public channel. Luckily our skilful team were on hand to assist the rower back into their boat, by which point they unfortunately capsized again. After several attempts the rower was safely back in their boat and was able to get to the start in time for their race.

For the rest of our safety boat crews, especially at the start and midpoint of the course, their input was often required to retrieve debris from the course to ensure the safe and fair competition between rowing crews. Objects retrieved ranged from the ordinary logs and tree branches to the more unusual cushion or loose buoy. But no matter the object, smooth and clear radio communication alongside precise helming allowed swift retrieval and demonstrated why Colwick Park Lifeguards continue to be the choice of safety cover for Henley Royal Regatta.
But of course it isn’t all work with Colwick Park. Every evening our volunteers met up for dinner at local pubs and restaurants to enjoy each other’s company and swap stories about the days events. For me catching up with old friends and meeting many new ones is one of the highlights of the regatta.
Our volunteers also have the opportunity to explore the regatta in their time off and in the true spirit of Henley our volunteers swap their lifeguarding uniform for suits and dresses and head off up the river to enjoy the festivities. Even sometimes saying hello to the crews still on shift.
Overall HRR 2026 has been a blast and I can’t wait to come back next year to do it all again, hopefully seeing you there.
